About The Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs (VFGC)

We are nonprofit volunteer gardening organization with over 200 clubs and more than 5200 members across the state of Virginia. The VFGC was founded March 16, 1933 and incorporated on June 8, 1966.

VFGC provides educational opportunities in all aspects of gardening and floral design. We promote community beautification, encourages the improvement of roadsides and parks, and aide in the protection and conservation of natural resources.

VFGC is the state affiliate of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), a nonprofit educational organization composed of 6950 member garden clubs with approximately 200,000 members in the fifty states and 447 international affiliates, making NGC the largest volunteer gardening organization in the world.

VFGC Projects

YOUTH PROJECT GRANTS — are awarded annually to VFGC clubs and community organizations for new or existing youth-centered programs. The focus of these programs should help youth realize the rewards and life lessons from gardens and habitats for becoming good stewards of the earth. The scope of these programs may include benefits to the community, environmental awareness/education, plant-to-food connections, outdoor classroom projects, horticulture education, and the social aspects of gardening. VIRGINIA WILDFLOWER PROGRAM — started with the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1976 is a program for the beautification of Virginia’s roadsides by the planting of wildflowers and trees donated by various civic organizations. Virginia industry and communities share the aesthetic and economic advantages of well-maintained roadways. VFGC cosponsored the wildflower specialty license plate, available through the Division of Motor Vehicles, with $15 from the sale of each license plate going to the Virginia Wildflower Program.

BLUE STAR MEMORIAL PROGRAM — The Blue Star Memorials were first conceived after World War II to honor veterans, but later they were changed to include all members of the armed services past, present, and future and became a project of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. The garden clubs felt this highway beautification project was a fitting memorial to the men and women who have fought or are now serving in the defense of our country. Funding for this marker has come from 6,884 members of the 259 clubs of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Each memorial is installed along with a memorial garden.

VFGC HEALING GARDEN — at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Virginia features plants known for the medicinal properties in a setting designed to restore the spirit. Donations from garden clubs and members across Virginia have helped to fulfill the pledge of $200,000 to fund this garden.

YOUTH EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES — are offered through SCHOLARSHIPS awarded annually to college students studying horticulture-related fields. SEE: YOUTH

TREX – Film Recycling Challenge
What an opportunity for your club to improve our environment and, at the same time, potentially receive a TREX garden bench for your efforts. The Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. was welcomed to the TREX Film Recycling Challenge.
